Bananas are one of the most popular and widely consumed fruits worldwide, thanks to their sweet taste and nutritional value. However, despite its popularity, banana exports present
certain challenges that can affect its commercialization. In this article, we will explain some of these challenges and the opportunities for improving the export of this highly valued fruit.
To address different challenges for the banana sector such as its rapid ripening and difficulties with some pests, researchers from the Agro-Bio Andean Region association are working on the development of genetically modified bananas that maintain their quality for longer. “The Fusarium Raza 4T fungus is a pest that is introduced into the vascular system of the plant causing the transport of water and nutrients to collapse, affecting its photosynthesis” (Agro-Bio Región Andina, 2023).
These genetically modified bananas have the ability to slow the ripening process and maintain their color and texture longer, which could increase their shelf life and reduce waste.
Banana exports are of great importance for countries like Colombia, which is one of the main exporters of this fruit in the world. It contributes significantly to the country’s economy and generates thousands of jobs in the producing regions
International Market Opportinities
To ensure that bananas reach their final destination in optimal condition, an efficient and reliable transportation system is essential. The cableway is a popular option for banana transport, as it allows for the fast and safe transportation of large quantities of fruit, guaranteeing freshness and quality.
In summary, bananas are an invaluable fruit for Colombia and other producing countries, but face export challenges due to their short shelf life. Biotechnology research offers opportunities to improve the quality and durability of bananas, which could benefit both producers and consumers worldwide. An efficient transportation system, such as cableway, is essential to ensure that bananas arrive in optimal condition at their final destination. At Centro Aceros we have a complete support system from the design to the implementation of the cableway system in your banana plantation.
